Your Guide to Enjoying the Beaches of the Northern Neck
Start Your Day at the Hope and Glory Inn
The first step toward the perfect day is waking up at the Hope & Glory Inn and Vineyard. After a night in your luxurious room or cottage and a delicious breakfast, you’ll feel rejuvenated and ready for a full day of Northern Neck adventures! Plus, our location in the beautiful town of Irvington puts you within driving distance of several local beaches.
Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve
First on your list should be the Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve. This gem of the Northern Neck is located just 20 minutes away from our inn, at the eastern edge of our peninsula. It’s open year-round to the public from dawn until dusk, with a lovely stretch of undeveloped beaches to enjoy. Feel free to take a stroll through the sand and soak up the beauty!
Plus, the Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve is home to walking trails that are perfect for bird-watching and nature photography. The path leads you through a wooded area with a boardwalk and two observation decks for wildlife viewing. Remember to bring a camera because the scenery is breathtaking!
Colonial Beach
If you’re willing to drive a bit further, Colonial Beach, VA, can be an excellent day trip destination with a beautiful beach resting along the Potomac River. In fact, it’s the second largest beach in the whole state of Virginia! You can find your favorite spot in the sand to kick back and unwind under the sun’s warm rays. When you’re not lounging on the beach, you’re welcome to stroll through town for some tasty bites and unique finds at local businesses. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
For an added bonus, make sure you save some time to check out one of the most popular historical sites on the Northern Neck — the George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Colonial Beach, Virginia. It’s home to a working farm, recreated houses resembling 18th-century colonial architecture, and a two-mile nature trail. It’s an excellent spot for an afternoon picnic before heading back to the Hope and Glory Inn!
