Why You Need to Visit the Historic Christ Church & Museum in Weems, VA

1. The History

Have you ever heard of Robert “King” Carter? He was one of the most wealthy and influential figures of colonial Virginia! In 1730, he set out to replace a wooden church his father built with a brand new, brick version. Although he wouldn’t live to see it to fruition, the beautiful church was eventually completed by his sons. The team at the Historic Christ Church & Museum has done an exceptional job researching and preserving this site so we can enjoy it today!

Step inside the museum and watch a fascinating timeline unfold before your eyes! It’s full of displays providing insight into the life of the Carter family and the influence of the Church of England during colonial times. Your journey through history begins with a film narrated by Roger Mudd and continues as you explore artifacts from the Carter mansion and the original church site. Check out their interactive exhibits for an immersive experience!

Did you know? Charles Carter, one of Robert’s sons, was the first American to successfully grow European vinifera in the United States. (It was a feat that Thomas Jefferson later attempted without success.) Charles was born and raised just one half of a mile from our very own Dog and Oyster Vineyard! He began growing grapes at Cleve Plantation on the Rappahannock River and, in 1759, he attracted the attention of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce of London. Charles had 1,800 vines growing at the plantation by 1762, and he sent 12 bottles to the Society. They awarded him a gold medal for his wine, and the Royal Governor of Virginia later validated his vineyard and wine production at his Virginia estate.

2. The Architecture

Make sure you take a moment to stop and admire the remarkable architecture at the Historic Christ Church & Museum, too! The church is an extraordinary example of 18th-century architecture featuring meticulous brickwork, vaulted ceilings, and gorgeous compass-headed windows. It’s also home to one of the only two triple-decker pulpits original to the era! Plan your visit so you can take a tour and see it all!

3. The Events

The history and architecture are two excellent reasons to visit, but they’re not the only ones. Get out your calendar and reserve time in your schedule to check out some of their fun community events! One of our favorites is the annual Raise the Roof Craft Beer Fest. We’re proud partners of the festival each year, and we invite you to join us at the celebration! The 2019 Craft Beer Fest takes place on July 13th at the church with live music, great food, and tasty beverages.

That’s not all, though. You can also look forward to their Sunday Speaker Series, trips to the Jamestown Settlement and Hampton, the Bringing Music to Life concert series, and even winter caroling!
