“…it started with asiago-flecked Rappahannock oysters, served in white shell-shaped ramekins. Then came potato-leek soup with local herbs, cornbread madeleines and—before a cheesecake dessert—lump crab with beurre blanc and Old Bay, that classic spice mix of the Chesapeake.”

A bed and breakfast with cozy rooms and darling cottages, the Hope & Glory Inn puts you right in the heart of small town Irvington. There’s a relaxing saltwater pool hidden away behind the inn, and a garden bath which is, yes, a clawfoot tub in a garden, is a surprising and restorative way to end a day. The inn’s restaurant, The Colonnade, is a fine dining experience in a historic space with Chef Meseret Crockett at the helm.

We stayed at the lovely, comfortable Hope & Glory to celebrate our milestone wedding anniversary. We had a very comfortable, restful and all around pleasant experience. The lovely, hand delivered breakfast was delicious. Advice on local activities and services was great. We would have loved to use the provided bicycles but it was hot enough in early September that the wonderful salt water swimming pool was more enticing. Our only regret is that our wedding day this year did not fall on day in which the The Colonnade was open so we will have to return to enjoy that experience.
Response from the owner: Happy 40th Bob and Mary Jane and thank you for review. What we liked about your review was it was clear you enjoyed being in Irvington:“Lovely town on the water”“…shops and restaurants in easy, walking distance ““lots of outdoor activities in this lovely little town on the southern end of Virginia’s Northern Neck”Thank you because we too believe Irvington is the most charming Chesapeake Bay town in Virginia and it offers so much.We do look forward to your return so you can experience dinner in The Colonnade.Grateful you were our guests.Dudley and Peggy
Peggy, Dudley, Heather and staff were amazing. Wonderful salt-water pool. Our cottage was perfect for our Girls' Weekend. We loved the homemade breakfast delivered to our cottage both mornings. And we really enjoyed Detention!
Response from the owner: Krissie, thank you for celebrating your Girls’ Weekend with us and for calling us “amazing”! We too love our salt water pool and there is nothing comparable to our gourmet breakfasts “delivered”. Thank everyone for staying with us. Love your pictures.Dudley and Peggy
You must make the time to take everything in. Things are not rushed here-when you dine in staff are welcoming and do not rush you to order or finish your meal. Nice change of pace. Salt water pool-un heard of. Outdoor old fashioned tub, a rain shower and sink (unique)-my favorite. Proprietors are friendly. You can bike around to closeby shops.
Response from the owner: xy,A beautifully written review. We love "you must take time to take everything in"; "things are not rushed here"; and, "salt water pool - unheard of". Your favorite is also ours: "outdoor old fashioned tub, a rain shower and sink(unique)."Grateful you were our guest.Dudley. Peggy and Chef Meseret
Absolutely wonderful service, amazing oysters crab cakes and wine (thank you Stuart!!) in the Dog and Oyster restaurant. The owners are wonderful and we really enjoyed the cottage accommodations. Definitely recommend!
Response from the owner: Sue, many thanks for calling “amazing”the oysters, crab cakes and wine at our Dog and Oyster Micro-Vineyard and Oyster Bar! Oyster Chef Stuart does a fabulous job. All of us, as you experienced, are focused on service in the most hospitable way. Thanks for the recommendation.Dudley, Peggy and Stuart
We chose Hope & Glory Inn for our sister getaway and to celebrate my birthday because it brought together two of our favorite things in the world—oysters and wine. What we didn't expect was to leave talking just as much about the people as the experience. From the moment we arrived, Peggy made us feel less like guests and more like family. I've been fortunate to travel to many wonderful places, and I can honestly say her warmth, genuine kindness, and extraordinary hospitality are among the very best I've ever experienced. Every detail was thoughtfully cared for, and the service was simply impeccable.Hope & Glory Inn is one of those rare places you stumble upon and immediately know you'll be back. Every member of the staff welcomed us with such warmth that the entire stay felt effortless and special. We enjoyed our wonderful conversation with Chef Meseret, whose passion added another memorable layer to an already perfect weekend.Thank you for creating an experience that we'll remember for years to come. We arrived looking for a relaxing birthday celebration and left feeling cared for, inspired, and already planning our return.
Response from the owner: "Eleanor"We thought you were the best two sisters we have ever had. We were fortunate to have you as our guests. We felt like you were part of our Hope and Glory family and accordingly were treated as such. You said so many glowing things about us. One that we cherished was your being grateful for your experience which you will "remember for years to come"Looking forward to your promised return,Dudley, Peggy and Chef Meseret
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary in the relaxed luxury of Hope and Glory Inn. Our lovely cottage was beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and furnished with everything we needed for relaxation and comfort. The inn’s luxuriant gardens, pool and sitting areas are a delight for the senses and complement the inn’s romantic ambiance. We loved the delicious hot breakfasts delivered to our door each morning. And we happily tasted the inn’s fine signature wines at the onsite Dog and Oyster micro vineyard, along with a lunch of perfectly-prepared local seafood. All of this alone would impress, but what sets this inn far above any B&B establishment we have experienced is the hospitality and genuine kindness of owners Peggy and Dudley Patteson and their dedicated staff. Guests are welcomed, pampered and attended to with a perfect blend of graciousness and professionalism. All together it made for an unforgettable weekend. Hope and Glory is a special place, one we highly recommend and hope to return to for another visit.
Response from the owner: Nicole, we thank you for this glowing review and your email. We cherish your descriptions of your and Mark's experience: "relaxed luxury", "luxuriant gardens, pool and sitting areas", "romantic ambiance" and especially "a delight for the senses". Humbling was your call on "what sets this inn far above any B&B establishment we have ever experienced". Your words were you experienced our culture of "hospitality and genuine kindness" along with "a perfect blend of graciousness and professionalism". Thank you describing what we hope we do well.Looking forward to your next visit.Dudley and Peggy
My husband and I stumbled upon the Hope & Glory Inn over Memorial Day weekend while exploring the area. Peggy and Heather were so kind as to get us accommodations last minute. We immediately fell in love with their whole setup. They put us in their 'Detention' bar area and we read through journal after journal of hilarious stories from their previous guests and their reasons for why they've been bad! Haha. They offered us a glass of wine and got us all setup. Peggy personally escorted us to our cottage and walked us through her lovely little garden. The room was great, we lit the gas fireplace, and had nice showers. The only note we had was the outside landscape lighting does make it's way through the curtains so the room stays somewhat bright during sleep. Some blackout shades are recommended. But then we awoke to french toast, sausage, and orange juice and had a nice little morning. We highly recommend the stay and have already referred our parents to go stay!
Response from the owner: Hi Chase, we really enjoyed your review and your delight about being in Detention. We were pleased your staying with us was a pleasure and best yet - unexpected. Thanks for referring us to your parents. Your father checks in today!Till next time, Dudley and Peggy
This was our second visit to the Hope and Glory Inn, and both were flawless. Hosts Peggy and Dudley offer the warmest, most gracious hospitality, making the inn feel incredibly inviting. The dining experience at the Colonnade restaurant is world-class; Heather provides attentive, delightful service, and Chef Meseret is a culinary genius. She prepares every dish with heart, and the food is simply divine. Despite a long day's drive to get there from SC, the instant calm and exceptional experience make it worth every mile. It is the ultimate place to relax and renew. Highly recommend!
Response from the owner: Dan we thank you again for a glowing review. Calling The Colonnade "world-class" and our Chef Meseret "a culinary genius" tops our list as a best in class description of our fine dining restaurant and its Chef.We do hope we get to have you back since "third time's a charm".Peggy, Dudley and Chef Meseret
John and I were looking for a comfortable get a way spot in an excellent setting and the Hope and Glory Inn was the right place for us. Peggy and Dudley are excellent hosts. We are looking forward to another visit to Irvington.
Response from the owner: John, your “5 star” review was most appreciated by Peggy and me. Thank you for spending three nights with us; and, we especially liked seeing that you and Gloria may return!Dudley and Peggy
We really enjoyed our short stay.We loved our outside lunch and were sorry that we missed a dinner at Colonnade.Everyone was extremely kind and outgoing.
Response from the owner: Jamie, we thank you for your review especially addressing the list of details about our inn and town. We hope you and Janis will find a reason to return “home”.Dudley and Peggy
