A Productive Virginia Vineyard
The Dog and Oyster - The Vineyard of the Hope and Glory Inn
Just a short stroll or bike ride away from our boutique Irvington inn, you can find Hope and Glorys newly acquired Virginia vineyard, The Dog and Oyster. The Hope and Glorys plan is simply to take its formula for delighting guests; and, apply it to the vineyard. One enters the vineyard by passing between two 40 foot cork screws. We have to believe they are worlds largest corkscrews and certainly the most expensive. Here, we have four 3 bedroom accommodations among the "Tents at Vineyard Grove." Our guests may use the pool and kayak docks are there as well.
The vineyard consists of more than 6 acres of Vinifera and French American Hybrid vines. There are four varieties of grapes. The two whites are Vidal Blanc and Chardonel. The two reds are Merlot and Chambourcin.
In addition to our amusing corkscrews, the name of our vineyard should also make you smile. The quirky name was created to honor the rescue dogs that rescue the grapes from deer and other animals; and, to honor the oyster, one of the Chesapeake Bay region’s greatest assets.
You may also wonder why here in Irvington? Just because Mr. Jefferson said grapes should grow in our western foothills. Few know that our area is very much like Bordeaux: sandy soil with rocks, a nearby estuary (Chesapeake Bay) and a water table which requires an underground tilling system for drainage are just a few of the similarities. Add to that one of Virginias largest vineyards is just 29 miles away would you believe, across the Bay on Virginias eastern shore. No surprise to us, these Chesapeake Bay grapes are sold to the wineries west of us. Visit our beautiful Virginia vineyard.
The vineyard is located at: 170 White Fences Drive, Irvington, VA 22480
